Claud Anthony Merriman
Captain (retired) Claud Anthony Merriman, R.N. (5 February, 1889 – 12 May, 1952) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Kingsford, Cheshire.
Merriman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 January, 1910. During the Great War, he served as navigating lieutenant in the destroyer Lurcher and the new light cruiser Carysfort. Superseded in this second role in April, 1916, he was made navigating officer in the light cruiser Chatham, following the flag when it was transferred to Falmouth. He survived her loss to a U-boat's torpedo in August 1916 and finished out the war as navigator in the light cruiser Weymouth, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 January, 1918.[1]
Merriman was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1922.[2]
Merriman was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain on 25 May, 1935.[3]
World War II
Mobilised in 1938. He would command Lanka and be Naval Officer in Charge, Ceylon.[4]
