Arthur Lionel Snagge
Vice-Admiral Arthur Lionel Snagge, C.B. (4 May, 1878 – 10 February, 1955) was an officer in the Royal Navy. An image of him at the National Portrait Gallery is not offered under a Creative Commons License.
Life & Career
The son of His Honour Judge Snagge.
Snagge was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1900.[1]
Snagge was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1913.[2]
Snagge was appointed as Naval Attache to Washington, DC on 21 May, 1918. He was superseded on 1 October, 1919 and arrived back in England on 23 November where he took up work in the Naval Intelligence Division on 1 December.[3]
Snagge was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1919.[4]
Captain Snagge was appointed in command of the destroyer Glowworm on 1 August, 1920 and as Senior Captain, Danube Flotilla.[5]
In March, 1923, Snagge was appointed in command of the light cruiser Ceres.
Snagge was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 4 April, 1931.
Snagge was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 January, 1936 and placed on the Retired List the following day. He suffered cellulitis on his leg, requiring hospitalisation in 1936-1937. He was fit again, if needed, by early 1938. In 1939, however, it was stipulated that he would be unfit for sea service.
