Commander (retired) James Charles Newsome MacMillan, O.B.E. (24 September, 1882 – 8 May, 1954) was an officer in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

MacMillan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on the Supplementary List on 1 April, 1914.[1]

He received an expression of the Admiralty's appreciation for his work in extinguishing a fire in the stokehold of T.B. 3 (possibly T.B. 5 ... hard to read) on 15 July, 1916.[2]

From 5 November 1917 through the end of the war, he specialised in Hydrophones, operating out of Newhaven initially, and eventually beign trained in the use of Fish Hydrophones at Portland.

MacMillan was appointed in command of the destroyer Sardonyx on 27 October, 1920.[3]

MacMillan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1922.[4]

MacMillan was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 24 September, 1927.[5]

World War II

MacMillan saw some service in censorship, eventually out of Liverpool. Reverted to the Retired List on 28 October, 1945, he died of cancer in 1954.[6]
