Commander (retired) Hugh Gartside-Tippinge, O.B.E., R.N. (23 April, 1896 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Major C. A. Gartside-Tippinge of the Royal Artillery passed out of the Training Establishment on 15 Sept4mber, 1913 and was appointed to the pre-dreadnought battleship Dominion. He served in her through 8 December, 1915.[1]

Gartside-Tippinge was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1917. He was also made a Flight Lieutenant with seniority of that same date.[2]

Gartside-Tippinge was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 November, 1925.[3]

He commanded the minesweeper Harrier for a period of trials from 15 September, 1938. Before the end of the year, he was placed in command of a group of destroyers in reserve, being personally borne in H.M.S. Caledon, vice the ailing Healey.[4]

World War II

Gartside-Tippinge was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 23 April, 1941. On 30 September 1942, he was admitted to R.N.H. Bangour with a coronary thrombosis.[5]
