H.M.S. Victorious (1895)
Pendant Number: D.48 (1914)
P.65 (Sep 1915)
P.3C (1918)[1]
Builder: Chatham Royal Dockyard[2]
Ordered: 1893[3]
Laid down: 28 May, 1894[4]
Launched: 19 Oct, 1895[5]
Completed: Nov, 1896[6]
Commissioned: 8 Jun, 1897[7]
Sold: 19 Dec, 1922[8]
Fate: Scrapped

H.M.S. Victorious was a British battleship of the Majestic class, launched in 1895 and sold for scrap in 1922. She was the third warship of the Royal Navy to bear the name.

Service

Victorious was inspected by the Controller of the Navy, Vice-Admiral Sir John A. Fisher, on 6 October, 1896.[9]

Victorious commissioned at Chatham on 8 June, 1897, Captain Edmund S. Poë in command.[10]

In June, 1910 while engaged in manoeuvres in heavy fog, the battleship H.M.S. Majestic collided with Victorious. Majestic suffered no damage but Victorious had her stern-walk damaged and her starboard engine temporarily disabled. No blame was afterwards placed.

Victorious was re-commissioned at Devonport on 2 August, 1911 for work with Third Fleet.[11]

In the Annual Manoeuvres of 1912, Victorious collided with Majestic and damaged a propeller shaft. She was brought into Devonport on 24 July, 1912.[12] I wonder if this may be the incident cited in June 1910 above?

For part of 1915 Victorious was lent to shipbuilders Armstrong's for use as a canteen.[13]

Distinguishing Signs

In March 1914, an order decreed that the ship was to carry two red bands on her after funnel,[14] but this order was rescinded within the month and she was to retain her present markings.[15]

Radio

As of 1901, she was slated to receive a "1 to 52" W/T set.[16]

Captains

Dates of appointment are provided when known.

The conflict between Gamble and Torlesse should be explored.
