H.M.S. Tourmaline was one of six Emerald Class corvettes completed for the Royal Navy.

Design & Construction

Tourmaline featured a new type of patented screw which substantially reduced vibration under power.

Service

She left Sheerness in November 1876 flying the broad pennant of Commodore F. W. Sullivan, who would travel to her station and become Commander-in-Chief, West African Station.[6]

By April 1877, her chief engineer, a Mr. Pitt, was driven to commit suicide under the pressures imposed by frequent breakdowns in her machinery. His plight was so apparent that the Admiralty was to arrange for a special pension to be awarded his widow.[7]

Re-commissioned at Bermuda on 13 November, 1889.[8]
