At the end of 1920, all "R" class submarines other than R 4 were allocated to Group "K" of Reserve submarines at Portsmouth under the collective command of Lieutenant Vivian R. S. Bowlby, tenders to Dolphin.[7]
On 1 December, 1922, Lieutenant Gordon L. Ansell took over Group "K", which now had sent boats R 10-12 to join Group "L" with three "G" class submarines.[8]
