H.M.S. Powerful was the lead ship of a two-ship class of first-class protected cruisers completed in the late 1890s.

Service

Her first assignment was to do duty on the China Station, departing on 7 October, 1897:

She is the largest cruiser in the world on active service. Great importance was attached to her commissioning trials, which finished successfully a day or two ago. Her officers have spent a great deal of money on smartening her up, and she leaves England one of the smartest cruisers that has been put into commission" (Eastern Daily Press).[5]

Powerful arrived at Lagos from Gibraltar on 14 August, 1903.[6]

In 1910, Powerful was the best gunnery ship of the eight tested of the Australia Station, scoring 55.65 versus the average 35.455.[7]

In mid-1913, she was in Devonport, attached to the training ship Impregnable.[8]
