British Ceylon, a Crown Colony from 1815 to 1948, was a valuable British base of operations, especially in the Second World War.

History

In Command

Until early 1942 the naval command of Ceylon fell to a Captain or a Naval Officer in Charge. On 5 March, 1942, Sir Geoffrey Layton was appointed as Commander-in-Chief, Ceylon.

Merriman's time here is not precisely dated in his Service Record.
