FitzWalter George Probyn Butler, seventeenth Baron Dunboyne
Captain THE RIGHT HONOURABLE FitzWalter George Probyn Butler, seventeenth Baron Dunboyne, R.N., Retired (20 March, 1874 – 9 May, 1945), was an officer of the Royal Navy. In 1913 he succeeded his father to the Dunboyne barony and became the seventeenth baron by patent and twenty-seventh by summons.
Life & Career
FitzWalter George Probyn Butler was born at 69, St. George's Square, London, on 20 March, 1874. His father was The Honourable Robert St. John FitzWalter Butler, a barrister and third son of the 14th Baron Dunboyne.[1] He entered the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet on 15 January, 1887, studying and training in the Britannia at Dartmouth. He passed out of the ship in December, 1888, gaining eight months time towards the rating of Midshipman. He was appointed to the Boadicea on the East Indies Station on 24 December.
On 5 September, 1918, he was appointed in command of H.M.S. Pyramus as Senior Naval Officer, Milo, in Catania, Sicily.
In 1899 Butler's uncle, Lord Dunboyne (the fifteenth Baron) died, and his father succeeded to the title.[1] Butler then became "The Honourable" Fitzwalter Butler.
His obituary in The Times observed that "He took no part in politics or in public life of any kind."[2]
