H.M.S. Dominion was one of eight King Edward VII class battleships.  She entered service in 1905 and spent most of her service in the Great War with a shifting roster of her sisters in the Third Battle Squadron.

Service

As part of the Channel Fleet, Dominion started a refit in Portsmouth on 7 April 1908. She was to have magazine cooling equipment fitted, which was supposed to take 10 weeks.[9]

She commenced an annual refit on 4 May, 1912 and finished it on 22 September, 1912.[Citation needed]

Dominion was assigned to the Third Battle Squadron upon its creation in May, 1912.

She recommissioned at Chatham on 15 October 1912.[10]

On 24 August, 1914, the Vice-Admiral Commanding the Third Battle Squadron hoisted his flag in Dominion while King Edward VII was away replacing cracked 12-inch guns. The following day she reported having two cracked 12-inch guns herself. The Commander-in-Chief ordered the Vice-Admiral that the guns were to be used in action.[11]

She remained with 3BS until becoming the last pre-dreadnought to be detached in April, 1918.[12] She became an accommodation ship in Chatham-Sheerness that same month.[13] She kept laying out the welcome until April, 1919.[14] In May, she fell off the Navy List.[15]

In 1934, her bell was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at the price of £10. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[16]

Radio

At the end of 1909, Dominion was to receive one of eleven Short Distance Radio Sets, to be installed at her next refit behind armour near the fore bridge, intended to supplant flag signaling.[17] In mid-1913, this gear was redesignated as Type 3.[18]

By the end of 1913, she and the rest of the Third Battle Squadron were all equipped with Battleship Auxiliary W/T sets.[19]
