Captain Pieter Gerhard Voltelin Van der Byl, R.N., Retired (26 October, 1854 – 7 November, 1921) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Van der Byl was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 23 June, 1880.

Van der Byl was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 28 April, 1899.

Despite his age, Van der Byl commanded three ships during and immediately after the war.

Post-War

Van der Byl was appointed in command of the battleship Albemarle on 28 November, 1918.[1]

Vander Byl was promoted to the rank of Captain (retired) dated 11 November 1918 in recognition of services rendered during the war.

Van der Byl died at home of arterio sclerosis.
