Arthur Welland Lowis

Captain (retired) Arthur Welland Lowis (24 March, 1875 – 17 July, 1938) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Lowis was born in Calcutta the son of Colonel Lowis of the Royal Artillery. He gained ten months' time on passing out of Britannia in December, 1890.

Lowis was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 September, 1896.

Lowis was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1908.

Lowis was admitted to Haslar Hospital on 26 June, 1911 for a fracture to his right tibia. Found fit 27 October.

Lowis was admitted to Plymouth Hospital on 4 November 1913 for a sprined right knee. Found fit 11 December.

On 6 August, 1914, Lowis was appointed in command of the troopship H.M.S. Dufferin.

On 10 March 1915, Lowis was reported from Egypt to have been slightly wounded while dismantling a mine.

In December, 1915, Lowis was ordered to leave Dufferin and take up command of Clio, in which appointment he would also be considered second-in-command of the Red Sea Patrol. His services in the conflict in Arabia and at Aden were gazetted.

Post-War

Lowis was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 28 November, 1923.
