In 1895, she was one of thirteen torpedo boats of 125 feet or greater length and four smaller ones stationed in Devonport.[6]
On 16 May 1900, T.B. 85 fired a practice torpedo which struck her. She had to be toweed to Devonport Harbour for docking to repair the considerable damage.[7]
