Rear-Admiral John Coombe Hodgson, D.S.O., R.N. (17 July, 1881 – 9 February, 1936) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Hodgson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1903.[1]

In May 10, Hodgson was the subject of complaints that he'd directed Cheerful ad Leopard to use a civil vessel's (S.Y. Hebe) moorings.[2]

Hodgson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1911.[3]

Hodgson was appointed in command of the destroyer Jackal on 18 January, 1912.[4]

Great War

Hodgson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1914.[5]

Hodgson commanded the destroyer Moorsom at the Battle of Jutland.[6] His service record note that Hodgson "led destroyer attack on enemy Battle Cruisers in Battle of Jutland, but was unable to come within range becoming engaged with enemy destroyers : after beating these off attacked enemy Battle Fleet & fired 4 torpedoes under very hot fire of enemy Battleships secondary armament." He was awarded the D.S.O. for his deeds.[7]

Hodgson was mentioned in despatches for his role in the 5 June, 1917 action against German destroyers off the Belgian Coast in which the German torpedo boat S 20 was sunk. On 24 September, the Admiralty against praised Hodgson for the "promptitude shown in taking Sharpshooter under tow after she was mined."[8]

He was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Bruce on 11 April, 1918.[9]

Post-War

Hodgson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1920.[10]

In November, 1929, Hodgson was appointed in command of the battleship Marlborough.

Hodgson was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 16 October, 1932 and was placed on the Retired List the following day.[11]
