Frederick Lewis Maitland Boothby
Captain (retired) Frederick Lewis Maitland Boothby, C.B.E. (13 November, 1881 – 3 January, 1940) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Boothby was born at St. Andrews. Upon joining the navy in July 1895, he named Colonel Boothby as his guardian, but this may not have been his father.[1]
Boothby was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1903. He was a clever officer, and was credited with devising an arrangement for indicating change of range and deflection. He was also courageous, as on 1 December 1904, he was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal and Certificate for saving the life of Petty Officer I. Crisp at IChang on 6 June 1904.[2]
Boothby was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1911.[3]
He was made a Squadron Commander on 1 July 1914 and a Wing Commander on 9 November 1914.[4]
Boothby was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1914.[5]
Placed on the Retired List at his own request on 19 April 1920, Boothby was promoted to the rank of Captain on 13 November, 1926.[6]
As World War II was approaching, Boothby requested and received permission to reside abroad, owing to a case of tuberculosis. he died in early 1940.[7]
