Evelyn Leonard Beridge Boothby
Captain (retired) Evelyn Leonard Beridge Boothby, D.S.O., (4 May, 1876 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Vexingly, the single Service Record available for him has notes overlaid on it and the electronic version does not permit one to read the service record beneath.
Life & Career
Boothby was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1898.[1] Boothby was appointed in command of the destroyer Lynx on 9 May, 1906.[2]
In December 1908, Captain Cayley judged that Boothby was "Most suitable for Destroyer Service."[3]
On 15 November, 1910, Boothby grounded Hebe in the River Tay and was cautioned to be more careful in future.[4]
Boothby was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 31 May, 1912, to be granted a step in rank upon reaching the age of forty.[5]
Boothby was placed in command of the armed yacht James Fletcher on 7 October, 1914 and was awarded a D.S.O. for his work with the Auxiliary Patrol, gazetted 14 July, 1915. He completed this appointment on 8 March, 1916 and undertook an appointment in the Yacht Patrol Office until 15 December, 1916. Retired Acting Captain Boothby was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Hermione on 16 December, 1916.[6]
Boothby was promoted to the rank of Captain on the Retired List on 11 November, 1918 in recognition of his War Services. He reverted to the Retired List upon being superseded in command of Hermione on 1 September, 1919.[7]
