H.M.S. C 31 was one of thirty-eight "C" class coastal submarines completed for the Royal Navy.

Dates of appointment are provided when known.

A Navy List shows Duff-Dunbar in command of this boat from 1 November, 1909, but this seems to contradict Service Records for both he and Harbottle.[10]
