William Penrose Mark-Wardlaw
Rear-Admiral (retired) William Penrose Mark-Wardlaw, D.S.O. (11 May, 1887 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Mark-Wardlaw was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on 15 July, 1906.[1] He was appointed to the Usk on 29 January, 1908.[2]
He served as torpedo officer in Hannibal early in the Great War. He then went to work on the staff of Admiral Colville, commanding the Orkneys and Shetlands, and equipped colliers to serve as "Q" ships.
He was placed in command of the "Q" ship H.M.S. Prince Charles, and on 25 July 1915 tricked the U 36 to draw in close, at which time he unmasked his guns, raised his colours and sank the enemy. Mark-Wardlaw had achieved the first "Q" ship kill of the war and was awarded the D.S.C., which award was replaced in 1919 by the D.S.O. after the war when proper consideration to his feat was perhaps given.
Mark-Wardlaw was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1907.[3]
Mark-Wardlaw was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 October, 1915.[4]
Mark-Wardlaw was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1919.[5]
Mark-Wardlaw was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1927.
After serving as Aide-de-Camp to the King, Mark-Wardlaw was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Rear-Admiral in 1938.
World War II
Mark-Wardlaw applied his hobby of flying to become a pilot with the R.A.F.V.R. in 1940. In 1944, he resigned his commission, now with the rank of Wing Commander, and took up the role of Admiral Commanding Reserves for the duration of the conflict.
He died at age 65 following an operation.
