Vice-Admiral (retired) Harold Hickling, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.O., R.N. (17 September, 1892 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of A. W. Hickling, Esq., a Merchant.
Hickling was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 July, 1914.[1]
Hickling served in the light cruiser Glasgow at the Battle of Coronel and the Battle of the Falklands.[2]
Later in the war, he served in Lowestoft in the Mediterranean, and then as gunnery officer in the battleship Commonwealth.[3]
Hickling was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 July, 1922.[4]
Hickling was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1927.[5]
Hickling was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1935.[6]
Hickling was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 2 January, 1945.[7]
He commanded the Torpoint shore establishment H.M.S. Raleigh from September, 1944 to January, 1945.
Hickling was placed on the Retired List on 12 January, 1948 and subsequently promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 2 September, 19248.[8]
