Captain R.N.R. (retired) Hugh Norman McGill, R.D. (29 June, 1883 – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Life & Career
McGill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 18 March, 1914.[1]
After serving in the armed merchant cruiser Teutonic, McGill was appointed to the battleship Canada from 10 August, 1915 to 6 December, 1916. He would see action in her at the Battle of Jutland.
McGill was appointed in command of the destroyer Seal on 8 November, 1917.[2]
McGill would suffer one adverse report in 1918 for a collision, but would be commended for his role in saving life in the wake of the sinking of S.S. "Lein[illeg]". He commanded Seal until he was demobilised on 25 January, 1919.[3]
McGill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 18 March, 1922.[4]
McGill was promoted to the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 30 June, 1927.[5]
McGill was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Captain R.N.R. on 29 June, 1933.[6]
In 1948, he reported himself as being retired in Liverpool and being unfit for service on account of his age.[7]
