Captain (retired) William Balfour Macdonald, D.S.O., R.N., R.C.N. (19 June, 1870 – 20 July, 1937) was an officer in the Royal Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy.

Life & Career

Macdonald was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1892.

Macdonald was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1904.

Macdonald was appointed in command of Firequeen and as Flag Commander to Admiral Bosanquet from 8 February, 1907 through 30 April, 1910.

On 6 September, 1910, Macdonald was appointed in command of the old cruiser Niobe, as she was to be transferred into service with the Royal Canadian Navy.Template:RCNL1910-14

Macdonald commanded Minerva from 12 June 1914 until 8 January, 1915. This seems to conflict with another man's records.

Macdonald was granted the acting rank of Captain on 28 October, 1915.

Macdonald was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Gibraltar in April, 1918.

Macdonald was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain (retired) on 1 June, 1920.
