Auckland is a port city on the northern end of New Zealand's North Island.

History

From 1871, the person in command of the interests and facilities was dubbed "Commodore, Auckland". On 5 March, 1893, this became "Maritime Commander, New Zealand".

On 1 July 2001, the "Headquarters, Joint Forces New Zealand" and the awkwardly-name post of "Maritime Component Commander" were established.

In 2001 or so, the commodore-in-charge's position was moved from Auckland to Wellington.[1]
