Rear-Admiral (retired) Archibald Cochrane, C.M.G. (20 June, 1874 – 15 July, 1952) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Captain Cochrane was raised in Bagshot, Surrey and gained seven months' time on passing out of Britannia.
Cochrane was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1896.[1]
On 20 February 1900 Cochrane was appointed to Ocean, holding gunnery duties temporarily while awaiting the arrival of Lieutenant Warleigh. In early 1903, he went to join Glory as Flag Lieutenant to R/A Grenfell on the China Station This lasted only until July. In 1904, Cochrane spent nine months in command of the Devonport Signal School followed by a few weeks at a W/T course in Portsmouth. At the conclusion of the wireless studies, Cochrane was again appointed as Grenfell's flag lieutenant, this time for sixteen months in Venerable, based in the Mediterranean.[2]
Cochrane was appointed in command of Speedwell on 5 July 1906. He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1907 while in command and left the ship around 10 January, 1908.[3]
Cochrane was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1918.[4]
Cochrane was appointed executive officer in Alacrity on 27 February, 1913 and served in her until 24 August 1914 when he was appointed to command Empress of Russia on the China Station.
Post-War
Cochrane was appointed in command of the light cruiser Colombo in December, 1921.
Cochrane was placed on the Retired List on account of age on 20 June, 1929 and subsequently was promoted to Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 4 August, 1929.[5]
Cochrane died of pneumonia and a cerebral hemorrhage.[6]
