Life & Career
Thompson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 28 March, 1907.
Thompson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 28 March, 1915 while on the books of H.M.S. Excellent. On 3 September 1915 he was appointed in command of the destroyer H.M.S. Cygnet.[1]
He left Cygnet to take up command of the destroyer Foyle on 20 November 1916.
Thompson was recognised as an officer of "exceptional ability," and was commended by the master of S.S. Manhattan for the manner in which Foyle took the steamer into Brest Harbour on 9 December 1916 under a heavy gale and high seas.[2]
Thompson's last seagoing wartime command was of the torpedo gunboat Hazard, which he gave up on 1 November 1917. He was charged with convoy duties for the remainder of the war.[3]
