Commander (retired) Charles Edward Wilson, R.N., Retired (2 November, 1888 – 24 December, 1930) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Port Louis, Mauritius.[1]

Wilson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 August, 1910.[2]

Wilson commanded the sweeping sloop Mignonette from her commissioning in March 1916 until he was hospitalised on 18 April, 1916. Although he briefly rejoined the ship in May, his health was poor and he was ordered to report to the Admiralty on 12 May. By 16 May, it was determined that he was unfit, suffering from neurasthenia.[3]

Wilson never recovered from a series of hospitalisations, eventually being described as in a state of "mental breakdown" on 7 November, 1916. He was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit on the 22nd.[4]

Wilson applied for a re-survey in June, 1917 and was refused. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 August, 1918 and eventually did merit a re-survey which described him as fit for shore or harbour duties only and reiterated the findings of a mental breakdown. Nonetheless, he applied on 19 December to be appointed to help sweep up mines.[5]

Wilson was promoted to the rank of Commander on the Retired List on 2 November, 1928.[6]
