Commander Henry Hastings Jauncey (25 January, 1851 – 9 February, 1890) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Jauncey entered the Navy in December, 1863.[1]
Jauncey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 17 December, 1873.[2]
His first and only command of the gunboat Cygnet was marred by a collision with an Italian merchant vessel while rounding Cape Faro on 4 August, 1883. Jauncey blamed the accident on the loss of cable shackles and a bower anchor, but the Board did not find this sufficient. He was informed of their "grave displeasure" in the matter.[3]
His command was cut short by ill health. A series of evaluations revealed his condition was persistent and severe. [4]
He married Edith Blanche Pringle on 30 July, 1885.[5]
A final determination of his being medically unfit came on 25 May, 1886. Jauncey was retired that day with the rank of Commander. Jauncey died forty months later.[6]
