Admiral Cyril Everard Tower, D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (3 December, 1861 – 20 January, 1929) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Cyril Everard Tower was born on 3 December, 1861, the third son of Canon Charles Tower, rector of Chilmark, Wiltshire. He was educated at Lancing College, before joining the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet in July, 1874.

Tower was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1884.[1]

On 7 July 1887, he was loaned to command the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 62 for manoeuvres.[2]

Tower was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1897.[3]

Captain

Tower was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1904.[4]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Eclipse on 11 July, 1905.[5]

On 23 June 1906, he was placed in command of the armoured cruiser Donegal.[6]

He was appointed as captain of the battleship London on 1 February 1908, thereby becoming Tower of London.[7]

Tower was appointed in command of the battleship Illustrious on 2 June, 1908.[8]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Swiftsure on 8 February, 1910.[9]

Tower was appointed Captain of the Dockyard, Deputy Superintendent and King's Harbour Master, Portsmouth on 1 February, 1912.[10] On 2 June, 1915, he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, vice Grant-Dalton,[11] and, in accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 28 June.[12] He was relieved by Captain Edward H. Moubray on 29 June, 1916.[13]

On 1 January, 1918, he was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order.[14] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 2 November, 1919,[15] and to Admiral on 1 August, 1924.[16]
