Captain (retired) George Ponsonby Sherston, R.N. (31 August, 1883 – 25 June, 1963) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Kildare the son of retired Major C. D. Sherston.

Sherston was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1905.

Sherston was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1913.

Sherston was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1917.

In late 1921, Sherston took the newly-commissioned sweeping sloop Laburnum from Britain to New Zealand, where she joined Veronica in an extended stint of patrol covering the South Sea Islands. The two vessels were under overall command of Commodore Alan Hotham.

Sherston was placed on the Retired List owing to non-service on 10 September, 1927 and subsequently promoted to the rank of Captain (retired) on 31 August, 1928.

World War II

Reverted to the Retired List on 31 March, 1946.

Retirement and Death

Before the Second World War Sherston had retired to live and farm at Kamutwa Slopes, Machakos in Kenya.[1] . He died in the Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya on 25 June, 1963.[2]
