Captain (retired) Winstanley Robert Coverdale Moorsom, O.B.E. (16 July, 1878 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Clevedon, the son of W. M. Moorsom, Esq..

Moorsom was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1900.[1]

In August, 1901, there was an enquiry into the loss of Harbour Service Whaler No. 3 while attached to H.M.S. Hardy, in which Hardy had been serving in 1900. No action was taken.[2]

Moorsom passed for navigator in first-class ships on 16 March, 1905.[3]

Moorsom was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1908. From 28 July to 11 August 1909 he was in Haslar Hospital to be treated for gastritis.[4]

Moorsom was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1913. On 22 July, he was admitted to Chatham Hospital to be treated for an intestinal disease. He was not found fit until 6 January 1914. To compound matters, he was admitted to Haslar on 23 February for a disease of the ear. He was fit on 21 April. Then, his misfortune continued, as on 27 September 1914 he was placed in hospital for a head injury sustained in a car accident.[5]

On 14 November, 1914, Moorsom was appointed to Harrier, additional, as Senior Naval Officer, Downs Boarding Flotilla.[6]

Moorsom was appointed in command of the torpedo gunboat Harrier from 10 February through 29 October, 1914. In mid-November, he was reappointed to the ship, additional, to serve as Senior Naval Officer of the Downs Boarding Flotilla. After two months in this role, he was appointed to Harrier and then Template:UK-Ceto, additional, to provide navigational expertise for the Flotilla. This work extended until he was superseded on 11 November, 1915.[7]

An appointment in command of Skirmisher in June 1916 was cancelled owing to sickness which would keep Moorsom out of service until October 1916, when some shore-based work was allowed him. In July 1917 he was appointed to Hibernia as navigating officer, and then placed in command of the armed merchant cruiser Orama in August, 1917.[8]

Moorsom was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Captain on 16 July 1924.[9]
