Captain James Wolfe Murray, D.S.O., R.N. (9 June, 1880 – 16 November, 1930) served in the Royal Navy.

In 1927, he requested that his name be changed to James Wolfe-Murray.[1]

Life & Career

Murray was born in Surrey, the son of a Major in the Royal Artillery.[2]

Murray was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 September, 1902.[3]

Murray was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 September, 1910.[4]

Great War

Murray was appointed as gunnery officer to Cornwall on 8 January, 1912. On 3 January, 1914, he advanced to be her first officer. He would be in her during the Battle of the Falklands.

Murray was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1914.[5] and left Cornwall on 4 January, 1915. On the 23rd became executive officer in the battleship Cæsar, remaining there until being superseded on 21 December.[6][7]

Later in the war, he was executive officer in the battleship Swiftsure and the armoured cruiser Suffolk.

Post-war

Murray was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1920.[8]

Murray was appointed in command of the light cruiser Colombo in April, 1923. He would spend two years in this command, his ship stationed in the East Indies.

Wolfe-Murray was placed on the Retired List as being medically unfit owing to tuberculosis on 30 August, 1929. He succumbed on on 16 November of the following year as reported in The Times on the 18th.[9]
