Builder: | Yarrow & Company[1] |
Ordered: | 30/31 March, 1885[2] |
Launched: | 1885[3] |
Completed: | September 1886[4] |
Sold: | 18 December, 1919[5] |
H.M. T.B. 63 was one of 53 first-class torpedo boats of the 125 Footer class.
Around 1906-1907, with the issuance of torpedo boat numbers to the first of the Cricket class torpedo boats, the existing Torpedo Boats numbered 25 to 79 had a "0" prepended to their number. This vessel, therefore, became T.B. 063.[6]
Service
An engine telegraph malfunction caused T.B. 63 to collide with T.B. 77 as she was getting underway in Sheerness Harbour on 5 July 1888. When the Lieutenant in charge of 63 gave the order from the bridge to go astern, the remote telegraph indicated "Full speed ahead", and 63 leapt forward with much gusto and struck 77 with such effect that the latter had difficulty remaining afloat. A Court of Inquiry was to be held to probe this misadventure.[7]
She was stationed in Chatham in 1895 as one of eight large torpedo boats of at least 125 feet length and two smaller ones.[8] She was still stationed at Chatham in 1905, as a tender to Pembroke.[9] By late 1911 she had been transferred to Devonport and was listed as a tender to H.M.S. Vivid, and was still stationed there at the outbreak of war.[10][11]
Sold at Malta on 18 December, 1919 along with her sister T.B. 070.[12]
