Captain Charles Paget Streeten (6 February, 1850 – 27 September, 1919) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Charles Streeten was born on 6 February, 1850 at Torquay, son of the Rev. Edmund Crane Streeten and Elizabeth Paget Streeten, and entered the Royal Navy as a Naval Cadet in the Britannia on 8 September, 1863.[1][2]

Streeten was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on Christmas Day, 1869.[3] At the time, he was serving aboard the ironclad frigate Defence.[4]

Streeten was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 17 December, 1873.[5]

Streeten was appointed to the Excellent for the Short Course in Gunnery on 6 March, 1882.[6] From the Excellent, was appointed to the ironclad Sultan on 20 April, 1882, for gunnery duties.[7][8]

On 31 May, 1884, Streeten was selected for command of a torpedo boat during these manoeuvres.[9] Streeten left the Sultan on 1 June and was assigned to the Excellent for torpedo duties the next day. From Excellent he was lent to the paddle frigate Valorous for command of T.B. 2 from 16 June, 1884 through the end of the month. After the end of the manoeuvres Streeten was appointed additional to the Hecla and, briefly, for torpedo duties in the Devonport flagship Indus before returning to the Sultan on 26 July.[10] He would remain with the Sultan until the following April.[11]

Streeten was re-appointed to the Valorous on a permanent basis on 18 April, 1885 as part of the general mobilization resulting from the Pendjeh Crisis.[12]

Commander

Promoted to the rank of Commander on 21 June, 1887, Streeten remained with the Valorous for another few weeks until being discharged to shore on 15 August. He spent the autumn and winter on half pay, before being assigned to the Neptune, a part of the First Reserve, on 12 March, 1888.[13]

Streeten left the Neptune on 24 March, 1890 and remained on half pay until being appointed to the torpedo cruiser Brisk on 3 September, 1891. Since Brisk was serving in the East Indies, he did not join her until October.[14]

In April, 1894, the station C.-in-C., Sir William Kennedy described Streeten to the Admiralty as being "a very trustworthy and capable officer whom I have great confidence in." On his departure from the Brisk in January 1895, Kennedy again wrote to the Admiralty with "much pleasure in testifying to [Streeten's] zeal & ability in the performance of his duty and of his desire to carry out my orders in an intelligent & painstaking way." Further, Kennedy described him "as an officer of long standing and worthy of advancement." Despite Kennedy's praise, upon his arrival home Streeten would remain on half pay until retiring from the Navy, at his own request, on 18 February, 1897.[15]

Streeten was promoted to the rank of Captain on the Retired List on 18 February, 1897, with retired pay of £395 a year. Although many retired officers volunteered for duty during the First World War, Streeten's service record shows no indication that he offered his services to the Admiralty, unsurprising considering he was in his mid 70s.[16] After his death in late 1919, his estate was valued at £1407.1.6.[17]
