Vice-Admiral Cecil Dacre Staveley Raikes, C.B.E., Royal Navy, Retired (29 May, 1874 – 15 February, 1947) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Life & Career
Raikes was promoted to Lieutenant on 18 August, 1895.[1]
His first command was of Thrasher, appointed in December of 1901. He'd briefly go to Boxer and return to Thrasher, before leaving in December, 1903. In April, 1902, Thrasher collided with the Coquette, and Raikes was found at fault and warned to be more cautious in future.[2]
After some time in the yacht Enchantress, Raikes was promoted to Commander on 31 December, 1905.[3]
After spending three months in temporary command of Enchantress, on 1 June, 1906, Raikes was appointed in command of the sloop Clio on the China Station.[4]
Raikes was advanced to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1913.[5]
On 27 January 1914, he was appointed in command of the depot ship St. George.[6]
Great War
on 26 January, 1916, Raikes was mentioned in despatches for "undoubtedly inflicting heavy loss upon the enemy."[7]
On 20 June 1916, he was appointed in command of the elderly second class protected cruiser Minerva on the east coast of Africa.[8][9]
Post-war
He was made Commodore, 2nd Class as Chief of Staff to Admiral Tupper, Commander-in-Chief, Western Approaches in Colleen (ex-Royalist) on 1 June, 1919.[10]
Raikes commanded Ramillies for 18 months, commencing on 20 January, 1921.
Raikes was appointed a Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) on 1 January, 1923.[11]
Raikes was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 30 June, 1924, vice Richard Webb. He was placed on the Retired List the following day.[12]
He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 23 May, 1929.[13]
Raikes succumbed to bronchial and prostatic carcinoma on 15 February, 1947.
