Vice-Admiral James Rose Price Hawksley, C.B., C.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (1 August, 1871 – 7 April, 1955) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Early Life & Career
Hawksley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1894.[1]
He was found at fault for the grounding of Sturgeon on 29 October, 1898 though no clear record exists of his being appointed to that ship.[2]
After a succession of destroyer commands, Hawksley was promoted to the rank of Acting Commander on 24 February, 1905 and to Commander on 30 June, 1905.[3]
His string of destroyer commands then continued. He was appointed in command of the "A" Class destroyer Spitfire on 11 July, 1905.[4]
At the end of 1911 after a short stint in command of Victorious, he was appointed to help refine instructions for training destroyers.[5]
Captain
Hawksley was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1912.[6]
He was appointed in command of the destroyer depot ship Venus on 4 April, 1913, supporting the First Destroyer Flotilla.[7]
On 6 January 1914, he was appointed in command of the scout cruiser Active, being made Captain (D) of the Second Destroyer Flotilla in March 1914. He remained in command of the flotilla upon moving to the light cruiser Galatea when she replaced Active, moving back to Active on 10 February, 1915.[8]
In November 1915, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Castor.
At the Battle of Jutland, he commanded the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla from light cruiser Castor as Commodore (F).[9]
Hawkesley was appointed in command of the battlecruiser Inflexible in November, 1917.[10]
Hawksley was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 23 July, 1922, and was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 24 July.[11] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 14 January, 1928.[12]
