Captain Edward Morden Bennett, O.B.E., (1 November, 1878 – 24 April, 1941) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Bennett was born in Bournemouth.
Bennett commanded T.B. 53 as a Sub-Lieutenant in the manoeuvres of 1899 and on 4 October, was appointed to Seal. He'd leave her on 6 February, 1900 for the second class protected cruiser Thetis.[1]
Bennett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1901.[2] On 8 September, 1904, he was appointed to Bulwark, additional, for Torpedo duties at Malta. After a year there, he was appointed in command of the armoured ram Orion. He was discharged from this command on 22 June, 1907 and sent back to England to requalify in torpedoes.[3]
Bennett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1909. In September, 1910, while he was requalifying for torpedoes at Vernon, it was planned that he would be appointed in command of Niger, but this was reconsidered and he remained at Vernon until 5 November, 1912 when he was appointed to Lancaster as first and torpedo officer.[4]
Great War
Bennett was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1914 and was discharged from Lancaster to join Essex. He remained in her until she paid off on 23 August, 1916. On 12 September, he was sent to Duke of Edinburgh to be executive officer under Captain Richard Hyde, the two men arriving after the departed commander Godfrey Francis William Grayson who had fallen out with his Captain, Henry Blackett in colourful fashion. He was discharged from her on 13 May, 1918 to go to Vernon.[5]
Bennett was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1919.[6]
Bennett left Vernon in March, 1920 and on 1 May was appointed for duty inside the Admiralty with the Naval Personnel Committee. He was superseded on the committee on 1 May, 1922 and placed on the Retired List at his own request on 22 June, 1922.[7]
World War II
On 8 July, 1938, he reported fit for service, but relied on eyeglasses.[8]
