Captain Cecil George Chichester, D.S.O., R.N., Retired (25 September, 1875 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Gibraltar the son of Major Gene Chichester, Cecil was raised in Barnstaple and gained nine months' time on passing out of Britannia.

Chichester was awarded the Goodenough Medal for 1896, being the Sub-Lieutenant who achieved the highest gunnery examination for the year and while also achieving a first-class certificate in seamanship.

Chichester was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1897.

Chichester was appointed to Camperdown on 7 July 1902 and in mid November was faulted for damaging a gun mounting in in the ship. In 1903, he was castigated for the mountings being rusty and in ill repair. The ship paid off on 5 May 1903 and Chichester was appointed to Hawke for gunnery duties the next day. This lasted only one month before he was appointed to Leviathan for gunnery duties, where he stayed until 25 January, 1905.

Chichester was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1908.[1]

Chichester was appointed in command of the destroyer Hornet on 10 November, 1913.[2]

Whiel in the ship, he was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal on 14 August, 1914 for lifesaving at sea. On 8 February 1915 he was appointed to Forward in command.

Chichester was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 1 August, 1922.
