H.M.S. C 9 was one of thirty-eight "C" class coastal submarines completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
On 25 October, 1909 she was one of three "C" class boats to complete a refit at Sheerness Dockyard, now adorned with a new pattern bridge. They were to be inclined for stability tests before returning to The Nore Submarine Flotilla at Harwich.[5]
Captains
Dates of appointment are provided when known.
- Lieutenant & Commander Charles S. Benning, 28 February, 1908[6] – 4 February, 1911[7]
- Lieutenant & Commander Robert H. T. Raikes, August, 1908[8][9] – 28 March, 1910[10] (temporary?)
- Lieutenant George H. Pownall, 4 February, 1911[11] – 10 May, 1912
- Lieutenant & Commander Charles G. Brodie, 10 May, 1912[12][13] – 1 Janary, 1913 (and for instructional duties)
- Lieutenant in Command Charles S. Benning, February, 1913[14] – 20 September, 1913
- Lieutenant-Commander John R. G. Moncreiffe, February, 1913[15]
- Lieutenant-Commander Claud L. Y. Dering, 7 September, 1914[16][17] – 1 April, 1916[18]
- Lieutenant in Command Henry F. M. Peto, 1 April, 1916[19] – 5 March, 1917[20]
- Lieutenant in Command Frank D. Morris, 5 March, 1917[21] – 16 April, 1918[22]
This boat's command sequence is probably so confusing due to inexact Navy List dates. Some tenures might be temporary.
