Admiral Rowland Nugent, Royal Navy, Retired (22 December, 1861 – 25 March, 1948) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Nugent was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1884.[1]
Nugent was awarded 1902's Shadwell Testimonial for his production of a chart of Aitutaki Island in the Cook Islands.[2]
Nugent was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1898.[3]
On 4 March, 1902, Nugent was appointed to Victory, lent for a Signal Course.[4] He was appointed in command of the sloop Algerine on 1 May.[5]
Captain
Nugent was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1904.[6]
In September 1905, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Gladiator.
He was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Flora on 23 August, 1907.[7] In October, he was severely reprimanded for grounding Flora.[8]
After completing a gunnery course at the end of 1909, he was to serve in a series of battleship commands, starting with an appointment in Majestic in January, 1910.[9]
Nugent was appointed in command of the battleship Illustrious on 3 May, 1910.[10]
He was appointed in command of the battleship Albemarle on 17 December, 1912.[11]
Nugent was appointed to command of the Lord Nelson on 16 June, 1913.[12]
He was appointed in command of the battleship Victorious on 30 July, 1914.[13]
Nugent was appointed in command of the Template:UK-ValhallaII from 27 July 1916 through 30 April 1917.
Nugent was appointed in command of the yacht Iolanda from 30 April 1917 through 6 November, 1917.
Flag Rank
Nugent was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 June, 1916,[14] and was placed on the Retired List on 2 June, in accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[15] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 25 March, 1920,[16] and advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 8 May, 1925.[17]
Nugent died on 25 March, 1948, at St. Mary's Priory, Victoria, British Columbia.[18][19]
