H.M.S. Gladiolus was one of thirty-six Arabis Class sweeping sloops completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
In April, 1917 Gladiolus collided with a trawler. The circumstances were taken by the Admiralty to indicate that her Lt. Cdr. Frederic Boyd Coppin should be "relieved as he appears to show a complete lack of appreciation of his responsibilities in cd." Vice-Admiral Bayly recorded that he found Coppin "fairly sat[isfactory]", but "not suitable for the South Coast of Ireland in war." He left in May,[6] replaced by Horace Walker who would command the ship for almost a year.
