Commander (retired) John Sharpey Schäfer (29 June, 1881 – 22 March, 1918) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of E. A. Schäfer, professor of physiology was born in Boreham Woods, Herts.

Schäfer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1902.

Schäfer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1910.

Schäfer was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 1 April, 1912.

He was killed in the sinking of the convoy sloop H.M.S. Gaillardia, very shortly after he assumed command.
