Vice-Admiral (retired) Basil George Washington, C.M.G., D.S.O., Royal Navy (6 August, 1877 – 25 August, 1940) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Bedford, Washington was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1900.[1]
On 30 July, 1906, Washington was appointed in command of the destroyer Banshee. In 1908, Banshee collided with Boxer, and blame was assigned to Washington.[2]
Washington was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1913. He was appointed to Powerful that same day and remained about one year as war broke out.
The Great War
On 24 November, 1914 Washington left Powerful and was appointed to the armoured cruiser Bacchante. He would remain with her until she was paid off on 10 February, 1916. He performed some work at the Mobilisation Division on the Admiralty War Staff before being appointed as Flag Commander in the Royal India Marine ship H.M.S. Northbrook on 14 July, 1917. On 14 March, 1918 he was appointed Acting Captain and Flag Captain in Northbrook. In June, he was appointed in command of the R.I.M. ship H.M.S. Dufferin as Acting Captain and Flag Captain, assuming command in mid-July, 1918. He was then appointed in command of the Caspian Sea in October, 1918. On 14 December, he was re-appointed in command of the Caspian Sea Naval Expedition.[3]
Post-War
Washington was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1919 and re-appointed in command of the Caspian Sea proceedings. He was sent back to England on 11 September, 1919 and in February took up special service inside the Admiralty.[4]
Washington was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 6 April, 1931 and placed on the Retired List the following day.[5]
Washington was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 1 January, 1936.[6]
World War II
Appointed as a Commodore of Convoy on 24 August, 1939, Washington died on 25 August, 1940 when S.S. Harpalyce was torpedoed by U-124.[7][8]
