S.M.S. D 4 was one of two D 3 Class divisional torpedo boats completed for the Imperial German Navy.
Construction
D 4 was launched on 9 November, 1887.[8]
Service
D 4 was commissioned on 15 October, 1888 and served as a flagship in torpedo boat flotillas until 1906.[9]
In early 1897 D 4 was serving as the flagship of the I. Torpedobootsdivision (Reserve), an element of the I. Torpedoaötheilung based at Kiel.[10] She was still flagship of that division in early 1900.[11]
D 4 became a fisheries protection vessel in 1905-1906, and a fleet tender from 1910-1916. She was modernized at Schichau during 1914, her original boilers being replaced with two Marine-type boilers.[12] D 4 was stricken on 7 December, 1920 and broken up the next year in Hamburg.[13]
