Admiral Bentinck John Davies Yelverton, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (28 October, 1862 – 7 January, 1959) was an officer in the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Early Life & Career

Bentinck John Davies Yelverton was born on 28 October, 1862, the son of Rowland Augustus Griffith Davies. He entered the Royal Navy and was appointed to the training ship Britannia at Dartmouth in January, 1876. He came thirty-eighth in order of merit out of forty-two candidates who passed the examination for naval cadetships.[1]

Yelverton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1885.[2]

Yelverton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1898.[3]

Captain

Anstruther was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1904.[4]

On 15 August, 1905, Yelverton was appointed to H.M.S. Ariadne in command.[5]

He was appointed in command of Bulwark on 24 March, 1909.[6]

On 18 March, 1912, Yelverton was appointed in command of H.M.S. Terrible, and a group of ships in reserve.[7] On 1 July he was appointed to H.M.S. Royal Arthur and in command of a group of ships of the Third Fleet.[8]

Great War

Yelverton was appointed in command of the cruiser Suffolk on 19 August, 1914.[9] On 17 July, 1915, he was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, vice Anstruther,[10] and was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 18 July.[11] On 22 June, 1916, he was appointed a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.). From 18 September, Yelverton was appointed to H.M.S. President for Special Service.[12]

Post-War

He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 3 November, 1919,[13] and to Admiral on 1 August, 1924.[14]
