U.S.S. Birmingham was one of three Chester class light cruisers completed for the U.S. Navy.

Construction

Birmingham was launched on 29 May, 1907, sponsored by Mrs L. Underwood.

Service

Birmingham was commissioned on 11 April, 1908 with Commander Burns T. Walling in command.

In March 1910, Birmingham had the melancholy duty of conveying the yawl of the lost tug Nina to Norfolk Navy Yard after it was discovered on a beach in Metopkin Inlet. The Nina had departed Norfolk for Boston on 6 February, and was last seen struggling in bad weather.[8][9][10]
