Admiral THE RIGHT HONOURABLE Edward Stafford Fitzherbert, Thirteenth Baron Stafford, K.C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (17 April, 1865 – 28 September, 1941) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

At the examination for Naval Cadetships, Fitzherbert placed eleventh out of the successful batch of forty-six.[1]

Fitzherbert was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1899.[2]

Fitzherbert was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1904.[3]

He served as captain of Canopus from January 1905,[4] then of second class battleship Barfleur from 9 May, 1905 until November.[5] His busy string of commands continued directly to Albemarle from November 1905 to the beginning of 1907.[6]

In December 1908, he became Captain of the armoured cruiser Bedford, remaining in command almost two years before she was wrecked near China.[7]

On 17 August, 1911, Fitzherbert was appointed to President, as Captain-Superintendent of Ships Building by Contract, Clyde District, dated 31 August.[8]

He took command of Colossus on 29 June, 1914[9] and was in command at start of war.[10]

Great War

Fitzherbert was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 24 October 1915, vice Tottenham.[11] On 6 December, he was appointed Admiral of Minesweeping[12] in succession to Rear-Admiral Charlton.

He was appointed to the new position of Director of Torpedoes and Mining on 18 February, 1917.[13] On 1 January, 1918, he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.).[14]

Fitzherbert was appointed Commander-in-Chief on the Cape of Good Hope Station on 20 May.[15]

Post-War

Fitzherbert was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 27 January, 1920, vice Vaughan-Lee.[16] On 5 June he was knighted and appointed a Knight Commander in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on the occasion of the King's birthday.[17]

He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 24 March, 1923.[18] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 17 March, 1925.[19]
