Admiral James Clement Ley, C.B., C.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (25 July, 1869 – 15 July, 1946) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Ley entered the Britannia on 15 January, 1883.[1]

Lew was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant, dated 14 February, 1889, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 24 November, 1890.[2]

Ley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1901.[3]

Captain

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1906.[4]

He was appointed additional in the Wildfire for the first class protected cruiser Endymion on 15 July, 1907.[5] He assumed command of the Endymion in February 1908,[6] but left her to take charge of London on 1 October, 1908.[7]

In December 1909 he was appointed in command of the heavy cruiser Cornwall.[8]

Captain of Collingwood dated 22 June, 1912.[9]

Great War

He commanded Collingwood at the Battle of Jutland, and penned her report on the action.

Ley was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) on 8 September, 1916.[10]

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 5 October, 1917, vice de Chair.[11]

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1918.[12]

Post-War

Ley was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 24 March, 1923, vice Fitzherbert, and was placed on the Retired List on 25 March.[13] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 August, 1927.[14]
