Commander (retired) William Sylvester Moor, (6 November, 1895 – ) served in the Royal Navy. His career was stunted by his manifestations of mental instability which may have been attributable to a 1922 skull injury.

Life & Career

Moor received training in submarines in April, 1916. Sent to Venice, by October, he was assigned to B 7, briefly, before being given to H 4, in which he served from 19 December 1916 to 25 October, 1917.[1]

Moor was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 May, 1917. This was adjusted to 15 February, 1917. He later served in K 4 and L 5, but in June 1918 he reverted to General Service.[2]

On 22 April 1922, while completing an appointment in the light cruiser Dauntless, Moor produced a private medical certificate regarding a fracture on the vault of his skull. There is no explanation offered as to how he sustained this fracture. He was hospitalised for two months.[3]

Moor was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 February, 1925.[4]

Moor was placed on the Retired List as mentally unstable, owing to a fractured skull, on 3 September, 1926.[5]

Moor was promoted to the rank of Commander on 6 November, 1935.[6]

World War II

Thanked for his 1942 Security Lectures, the Admiralty noted his suggestions.[7]

In 1944 while commanding Manxmaid, he was behaving erratically, being hot-tempered and dealing poorly with his officers. More alarmingly, he was abusive and threatening after drinking alcohol. This was treated as a medical issue, and he was not cleared for general service through he was permitted sea service in home waters and harbours.

He was reverted to the Retired List on 29 May 1945.[8]
