William Grier

Medical Director William Grier, (5 October, 1816 – 11 January, 1911) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
Grier was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States. He was appointed an Assistant Surgeon in the Navy on 7 March, 1838 and served on multiple ships up through 1861, being promoted to the rank of Surgeon on 14 April, 1852. From 1861 onward he served ashore, and was further promoted to the rank of Medical Director on 3 March, 1871. He served as the Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and Surgeon General of the Navy with the relative rank of Commodore from February 1877 until he was placed on the Retired list due to age on 5 October, 1878. He resided in Washington DC until his death there in early 1911.[1][2][3]
