William Etty Atkinson
Commander R.N.R. (retired) William Etty Atkinson (7 February, 1885 – ) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Life & Career
Born in Newton-on-Derwent, Yorkshire.
Atkinson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 1 October, 1915. On 15 November, he was sent to the Royal Navy depot at Port Said. He remained in that post until 17 March 1916. He was then appointed to the battleship Hannibal.[1]
Atkinson was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 026 on 17 December, 1917.[2] He held command of this elderly splinter through the end of the war. He was rated "a good seaman, trustworthy, a good C.O.".[3]
He was to be demobilised on 17 May 1919, but this was antedated to 25 April. Then, it was decreed that he was demobilised on the 24th, but it actually happened on the 29th. One almost gets the sense they were toying with him.[4]
Atkinson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 1 October, 1923.[5]
Atkinson was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 7 February, 1930.[6]
World War II
Atkinson was mobilised and served as Senior Officer, East Coast Trawler Convoys from 6 March 1940 to 26 April, 1940. He then became N.C.S. Kirkwall, serving at Lyness.[7]
